The magnificence of prayer

“Pray without ceasing” – 1Thessalonians 5:17

George Williams moved to London to pursue a career in drapery, the making of clothes. He found work in drapers’ shop. He was one of the 140 drapers worked there. George Williams was little different from others. He was a man of faith. Prayer was the pulse of his life. John Polack who wrote his biography says, “George could have enjoyed worldly pleasures as a twentieth century youth living in London. He had many points to pray for. But he never prayed for himself. He prayed more and more for his 139 fellow drapers who were with him in the work place. He wrote down their names in his diary and pleaded with God for their salvation. When he joined the shop, only one draper was a Christian. In two years twenty of them accepted Jesus as their savior.”

George Williams joined 12 of his fellow drapers to organize the first association, a refuge of Bible study and prayer for young men seeking escape from the hazards of life on the streets of London. They sent letters to other shops and invited them to join the association. 150 members attended the first meeting. This association was named YMCA (Young men’s Christian Association) This Association grew and spread all over and established in other countries also. How could an individual bring such a great revival among youngsters? It was possible only through his constant communion with God in prayers.

In the Holy Bible Prophet Elijah stood alone and performed mighty miracles and wonders. He often used to declare “As the Lord of Hosts lives, before whom I stand” How was it possible for an individual to affirm so boldly and emphatically? As he was a prayer warrior who had intimate relationship with God, Elijah called on the power of God to prove to the worshippers of Baal that God is the one, true God. They fell on their faces and said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!”

Beloved in Christ, prayer is our breath. We cannot survive without prayer. When we stop breathing, our life ands. Prayer is essential for us to lead a victorious life. Our prayer should not be a prayer of petition just demanding blessings and favor from God. It should be a prayer of intercession that pleads with God for others. We stand in the gap before God on behalf of others. If we love the Lord with all our heart, our prayer will hold a big share in the great revival.
