Keep yourself
“Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and grandchildren.” - Deuteronomy 4:9
Charles Darwin became famous for his theory of evolution which says that man has descended from monkeys. On his death bed, he asked to open the windows of his room so that he could hear the songs sung in a church nearby. Those who were with him were taken aback. They asked him what happened to his belief and principles regarding evolution. Darwin replied that his theory of evolution was nothing but the imaginary story of his youth. After completing theology without proper knowledge and understanding of God and without joining any church he gave his wrong concept about creation. The world accepted his theory of evolution but concealed his last statement of faith.
The modern world abounds with worldly wisdom, pleasure, scientific knowledge and with more chances and unpleasant situations that tempt us to turn away from God and His salvation. The younger generation needs to have strong faith in God which remains unshaken. To create in them such steadfast faith we have to pass the truth of scripture on to the next generation and we have been asked to share with them the mighty power of God and the way He leads our lives. The Jews were instructed strictly to teach their children about the greatness of God at an early age. So, Moses was taught about God’s sovereignty by his mother when he was a child. That is why Moses was able to stand for God with zeal. When Paul speaks about Timothy, he says the sincere faith that dwelt in his grandmother and mother dwells in him as well. Thus, his mother and grandmother brought him up in God’s ways.
How is our attitude? Do we train our children to give priority to God and consider the rest secondary namely worldly wisdom and ability? Have we grown in the right knowledge of God? Only if we are sober, we can safeguard our generation from vanity and lead them to God without letting them go astray. We should never forget that we are the guarantors for our children and grandchildren.
