Watch and pray

“…supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life…” – 1 Timothy 2: 1, 2

In a certain house in a village the fighting roosters were raised. One night the roosters were making unusual warning sounds. The owner of the cocks opened the cage to know the reason for their commotion. The roosters flew out. Nothing was found in the cage. But they made more noise. He was searching everywhere. At last, they understood that the roosters had seen a snake entering the drainage pipe. Although the birds have 5 senses, they tried as much as they could to warn their owner about the entry of the snake and to protect them from harm. 

In those days there were no kings to reign over the Israelites. The Lord alone led them and reigned over them. Later God reigned through prophets and judges. But the Israelites murmured and said, “Make us a king to judge us like all the nations and to go out before us and fight our battles.” God granted their demand and made Saul their king. But God greatly regretted that He had set up Saul as a king for he had turned back from following the Lord and had not performed His commandments. So, he rejected Saul and anointed David. Ha was a man after God’s own heart and he reigned according to God’s words and counsel. The kings who came to the throne in the later years turned back from God and did evil in the sights of the Lord. Thus, the country was kept in bondage.

We all have an obligation to pray for the people who are in authority and the leaders who govern us so as to lead a quiet and peaceful life. In this crucial period, it is essential to pray that whoever God wishes must come to power and to call upon God to have good governance and for God’s reign over our country. We need to pray to God to rise leaders who rule us with fear of God, humanity, righteousness and honesty. We have to pray for rising leaders who have no greed for wealth, power and fame but have a desire to do good and work for the welfare of the people. Just like the roosters that prevented the enemy from doing harm to his master, we the children of God must have great concern for our country. Let us pray fervently that whoever God wills, must come to power. Above all God reigns supreme and nothing happens without God’s permission. So, let us cast our votes with prayer and without anxiety.
