What is precious?
“…nor do I count my life dear to myself….” – Acts 20:24
A dangerous and uncivilized Indian tribe named Aucas lived in the unfrequented, dense forest areas in South America. They would throw the spears tipped with poison at all outsiders except their tribes. Jim Eliot, an American youth committed himself to evangelize such tribal. He learnt their language. He was planning a way to show them that they were friendly and they wanted to make friends with them. Jim and four of his friends lowered buckets filled with supplies to people on the ground and dropped gifts while flying over them to win the trust of them. They accepted everything and reciprocated. Hoping that they would accept them, they landed on a
sea-shore and set up a camp. But the Aucas threw spears at them and all the five were killed. What a tragic end! Jim Eliot’s wife was grief stricken but she went there and continued her husband’s missionary work. Today many churches were planted and ministers are rising from Aucas.
When Paul, the servant of God was in Miletus, the elders of the Ephesus church were called for. When they reported he told them that he did not count his life dear and he desired to finish the ministry which he received from the Lord Jesus. Though he suffered imprisonment, opposition, stripes and shipwreck, nothing could deter him from his obligation to preach the kingdom of God. He was journeying from one place to other without rest though he was fatigue. He was willing to lay down his life for Christ. He was rejoicing as he had fought the good fight and finished the race.
Dear friendly readers, the final and the great commission given by Jesus, before His ascension to Heaven was “go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation and make disciples of all the nation.” How do we consider the great commission given to us? Apostle Paul and Jim Eliot did not value their lives as proclaiming the gospel was dear to them. What is deemed precious in our lives? Is that wealth, title, qualification and life or God’s love? We can contribute liberally for ministries and spend more time on praying for missionaries and if it is God’s will we can do ministry. As we know the truth that “He whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it but whoever loses his life for my sake shall find it” Amen.
