Zeal

“Phinehas…has turned back my wrath…because he was zealous with my zeal…” - Numbers 25:11 

A renowned play back singer in films was invited as the chief guest for a function held in a college. On seeing the famous singer, the students were excited and they tried to converse with him but he was unresponsive. When the students asked the reason for his perfect silence to their questions, he replied feebly “I understand your expectations. I give priority to my cultured voice. I will not let anything affect my cultured voice as it is dedicated to the cinema field. I want to maintain my trained voice and melodious tunes.” See how a play back singer had the zeal for the worldly fame and name.

We read in the bible about the youth named Phinehas who was zealous for God. When the anger of the Lord was aroused against Israel, he made atonement. So, God turned back His wrath and the plague was stopped and the people were not consumed. God was pleased with him and gave him his covenant of peace and a covenant of everlasting priesthood to him and his descendants. Look, how he was exalted! It is a great ecstasy if our work is accepted by God. We feel elated, when people acknowledge us. But Phinehas was identified by God as he was zealous for the holiness of God.

Now let us ponder. What kind of zeal do we possess? Is our zeal for the world or for the Lord, the highest? Sometimes we may say,” Once we had such zeal for the Lord. But now we have lost that passion and fervor”. Let us not be troubled. Once again, we can become zealous and passionate through our prayers and by being holy and chaste. We will be accepted by God like Phinehas. Let us aspire to regain the lost zeal for God.
