No more casteism

“…But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.” – Acts 10:28

The human race is God’s creation. We are all equal in God’s eyes. But human nature is to look for caste discrimination and even some Christians and ministers of Christ are no exceptions. The extremity of casteism is exhibited in worshipping God in two different churches due to disparities based on caste system. It is agonising to have two churches in the same area while the mission organizations are in financial difficulties to found one church in a certain place where it is much needed. Is this just on the part of the christians to have such great disparities?

In the 10th chapter of Acts in the New Testament God gave Peter a vision. He saw an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners descending to him. There were all kinds of four-footed animals, wild beasts, reptiles and birds in it. A voice came to him “Rise, Peter, kill and eat.” Peter said, “Not so, Lord. For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.” But the voice said, “What God has cleaned, you must not call common.” That vision was shown to him thrice. Thus, when he went to Cornelius a gentile he openly declared “God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.” 

Dear friends, we cannot assume that someone is unclean or common. When everything is cleansed by God, we cannot defile anything under the pretext of casteism. God shows no partiality. Every human being is a child of God. Let us recall what Bharathi says in ‘Pappa Pattu’ “There are no castes in our society, it is a sin to divide upper and lower caste.” Retaining what Peter learnt from his vision in our mind let us commit ourselves to God and treat everyone equally and do away with discrimination. We are called to reflect Christ to the world.
