What is needed of a disciple? 

“…she was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did” - Acts 9:36

Three Christian youth were making a trip in a row boat. On the way they had a debate. One of them said, “It is enough if we are god-fearing; other than that, we need not be generous. If we lead a godly life, that is more than enough.” The other one said, “Being charitable is more essential than being godly.” This was how they were arguing alternately. The boat man who listened carefully to their discussion, he kept one of the oars in the boat and rowed with a single oar. So, the boat did not glide forward properly. One of the boys noticed the boatman with the single oar and asked him to use both the oars with equal effort to achieve forward motion. Then the boatman began to share his message. He said, “If we want to be a true Christian and a disciple of Jesus, just like the two oars, we require both godliness and good works.”

In the Holy Bible we read about a disciple who led a godly life named Dorcas. “This widow was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did.” Apart from doing good deeds. She preached Christ Jesus. When she died, the disciples sent for Peter. All the widows who were benefited by her kind act stood by Peter weeping and showing the tunics and garments that she had made for them. Peter knelt down and prayed and said, “Tabitha, arise.” At once she opened her eyes and sat up and thus, he presented her alive and many believed on the Lord. 

As we all lead the life of a disciple it is essential to be godly as well as magnanimous. Godliness and generosity are like the two sides of the same coin. We can manifest God’s love through our magnanimity. If we do so, just like Dorcas who was brought back to life, the lifeless parts of our lives will be enlivened so as to bring others to faith. If we are the true disciples of Jesus let us follow Jesus. Let us reveal Jesus to the world by our good deeds.
