God’s righteousness
“For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own righteousness have not submitted to the righteousness of God.” - Romans 10:3
A matter or decision may seem to be morally right and justifiable in the eyes of men. But God’s righteousness is entirely different from ours. Let us have a quick look at the incidents that had taken place in the Holy Bible regarding righteousness.
The tower of Babel (Genesis 11:4): - People decided to build a city and a tower that touched the heavens. They wished to make a name for themselves and live together without being scattered out on the earth. Their idea was that they could protect one another in times of disaster if they stayed together. They wanted to gratify their whim and wish. They thought that they were doing only what was just. But God’s righteousness was that they had to fill the earth without living together in one place. So, God confused their language and scattered them all over the earth.
Ark of the covenant (II Sam. 6:7): - David went with the people to bring up the ark of God from Baale Judah. On the way back the oxen stumbled. Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it. Uzzah thought what he did was right. But it was not God’s righteousness. Only the priests, the Levites could touch and bear the ark of the covenant. So, God struck him there itself for his error. He died there by the ark of God.
Woman caught it adultery (John 8:7): - Pharisees and scribes decided to stone the woman caught in adultery to death. They condemned her because of their self-righteousness. But God’s righteousness was to forgive her sins. As they were ignorant of God’s righteousness and they sought to set their own righteousness and opposed God.
Just like them, when problems arise, we affirm that our deeds are fair and just. With our little knowledge and experience we try to complete the task. We never understand God’s mind, plan and response towards it. We do not think of God’s righteousness. So, we are not able to submit ourselves to the righteousness of God. We can get to know about God’s righteousness only through the word of God. If we read the word of God earnestly and obey, not our own righteousness but God’s righteousness will be predominant in our lives.
