The Rock of Salvation

"Our soul has escaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers; The snare is broken, and we have escaped" - Psalm 124:7

An ant was floundering in the water that had been driven away. A dove saw it and pecked a leaf from a tree, and the ant escaped. The ant bit the hunter's legs as he was aiming at the dove that had saved him. Hearing the hunter's cry, the target flew away and protected himself. In the blink of an eye, both the ant and the dove were saved. This is a story that I learned in preschool. If we look back at the path we have travelled in the last month of this year, our God has not abandoned us in our journey of life, in illness, failure, and loss. Hasn’t our God been a rock that saved many of us who had gone to the brink of death!

From the beginning of the Bible, we read that God saved those who called out to Him. Despite all the good things David had done for King Saul, Saul sought to kill David. The Ziphites also came to the king and said that they would help him capture David, and Saul and his men surrounded David and his men in the forest there, in the wilderness of Maon. (1 Sam 23:26) This is the end of David’s life for those who read the Bible for the first time. But David was saved every time. In gratitude to God for saving him, he named it “Sela Hammahlekoth” (the rock of salvation), and then David went in search of a place of safety. Do you know why David, in the psalms he wrote, constantly praises the Lord as my rock, my fortress, my refuge, my fortress...? Yes, because he tasted that God, the rock who saved him, is always with him!

Shall we also thank God for protecting us like the apple of our eye during these eleven months? How many times, whether we know it or not, God has saved us from danger and harm. He commands his angels to protect us and waits for us so that our foot does not stumble on a stone. He has rescued our soul from destruction. Yes, He is the Rock of salvation! Not only David, but the Rock of salvation for us too!
