Sublimity of forgiveness
“…even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.” – Colossians 3:13
Nelson Mandela became the president of South Africa after a long struggle. Once after he was elected as the President, he went to a restaurant for lunch along with his security guards. Everyone placed their orders and were chatting while waiting for their food. At that moment Nelson spotted a man sitting right across his table and waiting for his food. He told a guard to ask that man to join them for lunch. The person joined them but without uttering a word, he quietly ate his food and left the place. One guard remarked that the person must be ill and he was trembling so badly.
Nelson shook his head and said, “I know him very well. He was a jailor of the prison where I was imprisoned. He subjugated me to all kinds of torture. Whenever he harassed me, I used to wail and become wearied and at last ask him for some water. This same person used to urinate on my head at that time. As I am the President now, he thought I might seek revenge and behave the same way and return the same kind of ill treatment. That was why he trembled out of fear but I do no such thing. It is not in my character to harm others, no matter what that person did to me. I believe that the burning feeling of revenge and angst will only cause destruction whereas patience and tolerance are the tools that can help develop compassion and humanity amongst us.”
Beloved the Lord Jesus Christ is the role model for us in everything. He prayed, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do” He pleaded with God to forgive the people who crucified Him. But we worry a lot and speak more about the bitter experiences in our lives and how we were hurt and insulted deeply by the words and actions of others. We live with animosity murmuring that we were cast out unjustly. But the Bible says, “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you” (Matthew 6:14)
Unforgiveness is a pit dug by us for our fall. Unforgiveness leads to bitterness, hostility, wrath and self-pity. These unpleasant feelings bring us heart ache and give pain to others. Moreover, the suppressed anger is the root cause for many diseases. So, to lead a healthy life that is free from ailment we must forgive others as the Lord has forgiven us without keeping count of forgiving and justifying the reason for it. To live in peace and to be worry free, let us reflect Jesus by lighting the fire of love in us.
