Wheat Grain
"…Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain" - John 12:24
What is the use of wheat? First, it is food, or it is seed. Yes, a seed dies and grows as many new grains. The Bible compares those who dedicate themselves for the gospel to die as a wheat grains.
A missionary couple named James Chalmers went to preach the gospel to the island of New Guinea, north of Australia. Knowing that the people of the island were cannibals, they were filled with God's love and went to seek out the people. They proclaimed the love of Christ to more than 105 small island people there. He was the first white man to preach the gospel to about 90 islands. He and his friend Oliver Tomkins went to the island of Corribari on Easter Sunday, April 8, 1901. The natives welcomed them enthusiastically. While they were rejoicing, believing that their welcome was genuine, they were unexpectedly attacked. Within minutes, their bodies were cut into pieces and thrown into a boiling broth. They both became food for the people.
In the Bible, many saints and early apostles died as martyrs for Christ. The first martyr, Stephen, was stoned to death (Acts 7:60). In Hebrews 11:36, 37, some of the soldiers of faith suffered reproaches, beatings, bonds, imprisonment, were stoned, sawn asunder, were tried, and were sawn with the sword. Oh, the list goes on and on. Even today, Godly men are being sown as wheat grains for the gospel.
Yes, beloved, today, as then, it is even dangerous to go to many countries of the world to preach the gospel. When we hear of such incidents, we hesitate to go forward. But when Jesus Christ sent his disciples to preach the gospel, he said to them, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28) He sent them out saying, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” See how the Lord sent his disciples out with courage. Yes, we too will go out to preach the gospel with courage. If not a hair falls without his will, the whole head will fall! He who calls us is with us. Do not be afraid.
