Forgive
"And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors" - Matthew 6:12
The crowd gathered on Mount Calvary; The reason why everyone, including the Roman soldiers, disciples, and the people of Jerusalem, were startled for a moment, was because it was the first word that Jesus opened his mouth and spoke when he was crucified. It was like a prayer. He said, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."
To whom did he recommend this supreme forgiveness? Beating him all night long, spitting in his face, taunting him, pointing a thorn at him, shouting "Crucify him", finally he drove the nails into his hands and feet and begged forgiveness from the Father looking at all those who were mocking him. He continued, "They do not know what they are doing." This is His Majesty's pardon; An expression of his greatness; It is proof that he lived as he taught his disciples (Matthew 5:44).
He begged for forgiveness because he loved them sincerely. At that moment his face did not show any feelings of anger, bitterness, hatred or irritation. Even as he taught his disciple how to pray, he taught the invariable rule that only if we forgive others will our sins be forgiven by telling him to "forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors."
Dear reader! Hardness of heart and jealousy can create a great barrier to forgiving others. The human mind forgives only verbally; Can harbour enmity. This is not forgiveness. Jesus not only graciously forgives our sins; It can be known through (Isaiah 38:17) that he throws them all behind his back. Let us as human beings know that it is not forgiveness to forgive them in name and remember them forever. Let us forgive others from the heart. A man in his forties remembers the betrayal of a woman in his youth and cries to the pastor after the service, "Am I forgiven?" He said. The pastor said. Yes for sure. And said Jesus of love, "Forgive the sin of your youth right now and fill his heart with God's peace." Dear reader! Shall we remember the one who has wronged us for a minute and pray with tears, "Father, forgive them"? The Spirit Himself will surely intercede with you and pray with us for our iniquity and sins to be forgiven. Let us forgive others' sins! He will forgive our sins!
