Love your enemy.
"But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you…?” - Luke 6:32
In 1950, when the war started, Dr. Kim joined the South Korean army to fight for his country. But he soon learned that he was unprepared for the horrors of war. The fear of death gripped him when he saw the death of his friends who were with him in the war. He prayed to God for the safety of his life. He decided that maybe if I survived, he would learn to love my enemies. God answered that prayer. He also survived by grace. He fought against his country and helped orphaned children in North Korea and China by providing educational opportunities. By doing so, he made many friends among those who had previously regarded him as enemies.
But the prophet Jonah left a different mark in the scriptures. Even after the act of saving him from the belly of the fish he did not change his mind. Finally, he obeys God but says that it would be better to die than to see God showing mercy to the people of Nineveh.
Beloved, because Jonah was angry with the people of Nineveh, who did not distinguish between the right hand and the left hand, he could not love them. But let us think deeply about ourselves. Can we love those who hate us like Dr. Kim did? Do we seek God's strength to love our enemies as God has shown mercy to us? When Job prayed for his friends, the Lord changed Job's captivity. Love bears all things, believes all things, endures all things. My people! We will abide in love. Let us love others and commit ourselves to live as witnesses to the world. Amen
