Where there is a will, there is a way

“Distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality” – Romans 12:13

In a village, two poor families were next door neighbours. One night an old man in rags knocked on the door of the first house begging for food and shelter for that night. The man opened the door and then sent him away saying that he could neither share the meal nor the shelter. When he went to the next house, he was given a little food and a small place to lie down and rest. In the next morning, after good rest, the old man got up cheerfully and gave an old bag to the poor man before leaving. The poor man found two gold coins in the bag. He sold the gold coins and set up a small business. Then it flourished and got enlarged. So, his family lived with joy and content in the heart.

In the Bible, it is said about Abraham’s generous hospitality. Verse 2 - 4 of genesis 18th chapter describe how he offered invitation of hospitality to the three visitors. He ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the ground. He was willing to bring water to wash their feet and rest themselves under the tree and to bring a morsel of bread to refresh their heart. Sarah made ready three measures of fine meal of cakes and a calf was prepared by Abraham. So, cakes, prepared calf, butter and milk were set before them. Thus, they were given a grand feast to enjoy. After having their good meal, they blessed Abraham and Sarah. They assured them of having a son Abraham and Sarah might have missed the joy of parenting. But God gave them Isaac which means laughter to make them elated.

Every one of us needs to be charitable without expecting anything in return. God’s gracious blessings are given not to be hoarded but to be shared no matter how we had toiled for it. If we have the mind to be generous, we shall give and give for nothing in return. Christ Jesus who searches our magnanimous mind will reward us in time. Inspite of her poverty, the widow of Zarephath fed the prophet and as a result the little flour and oil she had never ran out. If we give out of our “want” we will experience the state of fulfilment in our lives.
