“Obadiah feared the Lord greatly” – 1Kings 18:3

The name Obadiah means “The servant of God.” Obadiah was holding the highest position as the chief steward in King Ahab’s court. There is a saying, “When in Rome, do what Romans do. Contrary to the proverb, Obadiah was opposite to what others did and believed. He had the strong desire to please God and was afraid of grieving Him. The Bible says “He feared the Lord greatly.” Only a few biblical characters were described as God fearing people and Obadiah’s name was added in the list. Let us learn a little more about this devout believer in the Lord.

King Ahab had a major share in making the Israelites commit the sin of idolatry. He was prodded by his wife Jezreel to do what was evil. He led the Israelites serve and worship idols. The worst thing he did was to kill most of the prophets. In such a situation, Obadiah hid a hundred prophets of God in two caves, fifty in each and fed them with bread and water to protect them from Jezreel. He did not worry about the consequences of his bold act of saving the prophets. He knew very well that Jezreel would not spare his life if the matter was brought to her knowledge. He never wanted to have a hand in the wicked acts of Ahab and Jezreel. He was very particular in safe guarding God’s men and providing them with food. Such wonderful traits were not given as gift to Obadiah in a day. The Bible says that he feared the Lord from his youth. (1Kings 18:12)

In today’s devotional, the Holy spirit is intervening with us. A question is put forth to us no matter whether we are young or old. Let us ask ourselves if we have reverence and fear for the Lord. We are living in a world where there is no understanding of the Lord and no fear of God. But we have been called to lead a life that is acceptable to God. Let us not grieve God by pleasing men. If we yield to trifling sin, that neglected sin may take away our fear of God and will lead us astray. Let us beware of it!
