Abigail 

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” – Proverbs 15:1

Who can obstruct David from destroying every male associated with Nabal’s household before morning light? It was not only David but also a big crowd of 400 armed men were to be appeased. While reading about Abigail are we not astonished at her prudence to deal with the difficult situation single handedly and to make peace with David who was seeking vengeance? Let us see, how God uses the weaker vessels to carry out great things in His field. 

The name Abigail means “Joy.” She might have been joyless as her husband was a scoundrel. But she was very intelligent. When she heard that Nabal reviled the messengers sent by David and about his plan to avenge him, Abigail made haste in meeting David and negotiating with him. Her approach was to offer a feast on the way as a token of hospitality to cool him down. She sent her servants with food in front of her. Before David could know about the men and their various goodies, Abigail got off her donkey and bowed down before David with her face to the ground and fell at his feet. Before she could be identified as Nabal’s wife, she spoke softly and meekly to him and her pleasing words softened and melted his hardened heart and turned away his wrath. Her words were neither showy nor empty. They were full of grace and truth. It was not an exaggeration that her attitude pacified not only David but also his men. The great wall made of feeling of revenge and destruction collapsed by Abigail’s hospitality, humble heart, meekness and gentle words. Yes, the wise woman builds her house. (Proverbs 14:1) Hallelujah! 

I believe that this message will help us, if we are encountering a problem as Abigail had in her family. Without grieving and shedding tears over the problem, let us pray and overcome it with God’s help. May the Lord who remembered Abigail for good, will lead you for good too. Our light affliction which is for a moment will bring exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Amen.
