David

“…let him curse; for so the Lord has ordered him.” – 2 Samuel 16:11

When Absalom planned to pursue and murder David, he was fleeing to escape barefoot. While he was running Shimei, a man from the family of the house of Saul came forth cursing. He was throwing stones at David and his servants and kicking dust and cursing David continuously. He said, “Come out! You bloodthirsty man!” It was an insult to his injury and made the bad situation worst. Those who were with David awaited to take off Shimei’s head. But David depended on God to handle the issue. He said, “Let him curse; for so the Lord has ordered him.” He never said that God would recompense evil to him as he was cursing him for no reason at all. On the contrary he said, “The Lord will repay me with good for his cursing” how upright his heart was!

Nowadays, what is being said in the pulpit? It is said that God will avenge the enemies and as vengeance is God’s He will repay. But Jesus has taught us to love our enemies. What do we do? We wait for the downfall of our opponent and to see how they are avenged. If we look at our adversary with such mindset, there won’t be any difference between believers and non-believers. In fact, we have no other enemies other than satan.

Beloved, what does the Bible say about Christ Jesus? When He was reviled, He did not revile in return. When He suffered, He did not threaten but committed Himself to Him that judges righteously. David had the mind of Christ. Let us also reveal such admirable traits. No matter how many men like Shimei rise, let us pray to God to repay us with good. In the later years, David was given an opportunity to put Shimei to death for cursing the Lord’s anointed. But he spared him (2 Samuel 19:23). He was so magnanimous to forgive him. He set a good example to us by showing mercy to Shimei without pointing to the wrong he had done to him and without wounding his heart by his insulting words. Let us reveal our divine traits to the non-Christians. May God help us to adorn ourselves with good qualities.

- T. Samuel
