Hannah

“I …have poured out my soul before the Lord.” – 1Samuel 1:15

In the Old Testament we meet Hannah, a simple woman from an ordinary family. But her prayer is very special and notable. Hannah was like a mother over Israel possessing admirable traits that can be imitated. Moreover, she had a gentle and quiet spirit. She had the incorruptible ornament of meek and quiet spirit which is a hidden quality in the heart. It is very precious in the sight of God.

Hannah was in grief and sorrow because of her infertility. Each year when she went to the House of the Lord to worship, Peninnah provoked her. Hannah wept bitterly in anguish for many years. Being reproached, ridiculed and taunted, she was broken hearted. But nowhere it is mentioned that she retaliated to Peninnah and lashed out at her. She never remarked with pride that she was the darling of Elkanah. Instead, she held her tongue. She did not air her grievances to anyone. Though she did not respond, her answer was in the tears that rolled down her cheeks. She demonstrated grace and humility through her words to Eli when he misjudged her of being drunk while she was praying for a long time with tears. Without spitting out words she responded well. She says, “No, my Lord.” Even when she experienced hard times, her good nature remained with her. Such good nature brought honour to her in the family. Her husband’s love, regards and compassion for her increased. She acted not according to the flesh but by the spirit to become a spiritual woman. She maintained silence but out of heaven God thundered upon them. Yes, Hannah was blessed with Samuel. Now her mouth was enlarged and smiled over her enemies and she praised God and offered thanks to Him.

Beloved, in our family, in workplace or in church we dare not utter boldly anything according to the thought of the flesh. Let us be meek and quiet and walk in the spirit. Bear in mind that if we keep quiet, Heaven will thunder for us. We should not think that being silent is cowardice. The gentle and quiet spirit is precious in the sight of God, isn’t it? We have taught the story of Hannah to our children. Let us learn the trait of being silent from her today.
