Deborah

“Against you I will deploy Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude at the river Kishon; and I will deliver him into your hand.” – Judges 4:7

I am Deborah who is here to speak to you in today’s devotional. I am a woman of the Bible. The meaning of my name Deborah is “the bee.” Lapidoth was my husband. We lived near a palm tree between Ramah and Bethel in the mountain of Ephraim.

Being a housewife, I used to complete my work and carry out my responsibilities and then held court beneath the palm tree of Deborah every day. The children of Israel came up to me to have their disputes decided. For each hearing I sought God’s help and made decision. I am the only woman judge among the 16 judges of Israel. I am one of the seven prophetesses in the Bible. Jabin, a King of Canaan harshly oppressed the children of Israel. We, the children of Israel cried out to the Lord. The Lord heard our cry and the Lord raised up Barak. But Barak was reluctant to go to war without me. He insisted me to come with him to the battle. I also accompanied him. The Lord gave us mighty victory over our enemies. As we were triumphant, we sang and praised the Lord Almighty and gave thanks with a grateful heart. I have special liking for singing praises to the Lord and composing songs.

The land had rest for 40 years when I was judging them. Having the well-being of the people in mind, I did many good deeds as my hands were strengthened by the Lord. When Jabin was in power, people ran away from the villages out of fear and thus village life came to an end. With heavenly strength, I was able to do good to them. So, I was called Mother Deborah, the Mother over Israel.

Beloved sisters and brothers, we have been called to rise and do some good things for Christ. Do we think that the situation is unfavourable? I too had unfavourable situation. I had more work and responsibilities. I planned well, ahead and carried them out on time and I had the passion and zeal to rise and shine for the Lord. Those who arise for the Lord, will never retreat without achieving the goal. It is certain that even women, the weaker vessels are used by God according to His will. God desires to bring salvation to the villages around your place through you. Won’t you arise? I take leave of you wishing that you must become Mother over India as I was the Mother over Israel.
