Daily Devotion (English) – 06.07.2021 (Bible Characters Special)

Jochebed 

“…Take this child away and nurse him for me…” – Exodus 2:9 

When the famine was severe over all the face of the earth, from the land of Canaan Jacob and his children, and the descendants were brought to Egypt by Joseph and Levi was one of them. Jochebed was born to Levi at his old age. The word Jochebed means “Yahweh is glory.” Amram was her husband and Aaron, Miriam and Moses were their children. (Exodus 6:20) When the third baby Moses was in Jochebed’s womb, the king of Egypt commanded all his people saying “Every son who is born you shall cast into the river and spare the daughters of the Hebrew women. In this dangerous situation she was expecting Moses. They did not think “Why should we have this child? We have a son and daughter and it is not a problem if we lose the child?” But they hid him for three months and then unable to conceal him any longer, she trusted in God and put the child in an ark of bulrushes and laid it in the reeds by the bank of the river Nile, where crocodiles are found in large number. But her strong faith cast out fear and strengthened her to confront the difficult problem. 

Through the Pharaoh’s daughter, Jochebed got the opportunity to nurse Moses at a given wage. She was paid to take care of her own son. Will God forsake the one who trusts in Him? Children are a heritage and a reward from the Lord. So instead of lavishing money on them, let us spend more time with our children. Moses’ mother would have fed her son with the knowledge of the Lord and the word of God while nurturing him. That’s why when he came of age, he esteemed the reproach of Christ great in riches than the treasures in Egypt and he chose to do the will of God by suffering affliction with the people of God than enjoying the passing pleasure of sin. What a reward! He was given the wisdom from heaven to write the Torah, the first five books of the Bible. 

Each mother is a sculptor who shapes, moulds and creates her child. Mother’s lap is the first and best school. Beloved parents, how do we bring up our children? Just like Jochebed, do we feed our children with the knowledge of the Lord and the word of God. Her name was included on the list of heroines of faith. Look! How the children of Jochebed were raised! Miriam was a prophetess, a singer and a worship warrior; Aaron was the first high priest of the Israelites; Moses was a prophet and a meek leader who led Israel out of slavery in Egypt and brought them to the edge of the promised land of Canaan. May God grant us the lovingkindness to bring up the children in Christ and be mothers of faith.
