Isaac
“…Isaac loved Rebekah…” – Genesis 24:67
Isaac was born to our forefather Abraham and his wife Sarah in their old age. Sarah passed away before Isaac got married. Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah as his wife and he loved her deeply. Let us turn back to the family life of Isaac and Sarah to find out what are the things to be learnt from their life and the things to be ignored.
Things to be learnt: Isaac was a man of prayer. Even as a youth, before marriage he went out to meditate in the field in the evening (Genesis 24:63). He had grown and deeply rooted in his prayer life. Rebekah was barren for twenty years. But Isaac never provoked her. He never grieved her heart with his words. They did not share their burden with the others. Instead, Isaac pleaded with the Lord for his wife because she was childless and the Lord heeded his voice (Genesis 25:21). Yes, we should never let our friends, parents or relatives meddle in our private affairs. We must turn all our worries and problems over to God alone. How many of us love our spouse truly with the first love? The wife may be barren or very weak, the husband may not have a good job or a permanent job. But inspite of all the short comings, as family is created and spouse and family life are given by God, we need to love each other dearly. Moreover, Isaac spent sufficient time with his wife. Nowadays there are so many objects that eat up our time. There are husbands who are always engrossed in watching T.V., using mobile phone or reading the newspaper. Life partners need to spend time together as they are one flesh. Their oneness is the strong pillar that upholds the family, which is likened to a building.
Things to be ignored: This couple showed favoritism to their sons. Both displayed partiality towards their children. Esau, the elder was Isaac’s favourite, and Jacob, the younger, was Rebekah’s favourite. Because of their partiality, their family was split. Let us love and treat all our children equally. All fingers are not the same but all of them are unique. In the same way, each child is different in nature, gifts and behaviour. But we need to love them equally and share the blessings without showing favouritism, then only our family will be blessed.
May God give grace to our family to be a blessed one that is overflowing with love.
