“…if I preach the gospel… for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel!” – 1 Corinthians 9:16
At one time, “The Pilgrim’s Progress” written by John Bunyan stood second to the Holy Bible in value and regarded as one of the bestselling books in the world of Christianity. This book was written by John Bunyan when he was imprisoned in 1675. In his days, no one could preach the gospel without prior permission of the government. But John Bunyan, without any fear for the rules, he went around preaching about salvation. So, he was imprisoned. He could have freed himself by promising not to preach anymore but he refused to do so.
One day John Bunyan’s daughter came to the prison to meet him. Her very appearance troubled his eyes as she was in rags and had gone thin. With compassion and tears she looked at her father and said, “Dad, we live in extreme poverty at home; Mom sent me to you. Please come home. Don’t preach anymore.” John Bunyan’s heart was broken by her request. He embraced his daughter in a bear hug and gave a kiss on her bony cheek and said, “Dear child, how can I fail to preach the love of God to the perishing mankind?” He sent her away saying that God would protect and take care of them.
Yes, like Apostle Paul and John Bunyan we too must feel that preaching the gospel is compelled and woe to us if we do not preach the good news. Not only the gospel ministers but also every Christian who has received salvation must spread the gospel whether the opportunity is favorable or unfavorable convenient or inconvenient.
Some of the signs foretelling the second coming of Jesus Christ are now being fulfilled and they are clearly seen. The end is near. The son of man will come at any moment. But many people have never heard of Jesus. We are committed to talk to them about God’s judgment, heaven and hell. Let us all strive for the Lord’s kingdom by spreading the gospel till our last breath.
