“Give, and it will be given to you…” – Luke 6:38
Anne Askwith was the manager of the Sarah Tucker institutions at Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli district. One day I 1888, a little blind boy came to Sarah Tucker campus to beg for alms. Askwith informed the little boy that they give only education there. When the blind boy found that he had come into an institution, he began to beg for education instead of for alms. His desire for learning had a powerful impact on Askwith. Pondering the little blind boy’s need, Miss. Askwith dreamed of a school for the blind. She studied how to teach the blind and in 1890 the first class for the blind children was opened. Thus, the school had a strange beginning. It has steadily grown to be one of the biggest of its kind in India.
In the Holy Bible we read that the widow at Zarephath had only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. In this situation, she first made a small loaf of bread for Prophet Elijah with what she had. Because of her sacrificial act, the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry until the day the Lord sent rain on the land. She had a very little but she shared her last morsel and she was blessed and was prosperous even during famine.
Beloved readers, God loved the world, that He gave His only son for us. That is the greatest reason behind our love to God. The widow gave what all she had for her survival and received blessings. Anne Askwith sacrificed her education and founded “The Askwith school for the visually Handicapped” During this lockdown, many people around us are jobless and are not able to get one meal for a day. Let us help them as much as we can by sharing what we have. Let us lend a helping hand to the needy and poor. God will bless and reward us if we carry each other’s burden. God is pleased when we do good and share with others who are in need.
