Can you do it?

 “… Love your enemies…” - Matthew 5:44

A well-known minister of Christ visited Calcutta often for doing his ministry. He despised the sight of being encircled by the drivers of taxis and autos as soon as he got off the train and asked where to drop him. They competed with one another and asked which place to go. And then the pestering of beggars for alms was a nuisance to him. He was irritated on seeing the drivers and beggars.

Once as usual he got off the train. A taxi driver seized his hand luggage and asked where to drop him. The minister of Christ snatched his bag from him in anger and began to walk. He just walked a few steps with the luggage. He slipped and fell to ground. His chin was hurt and was bleeding. There were blood stains in his clothes. A little boy came running with a water bottle and asked him to drink some water and wash the wound and the stains with it. After washing the wound, he looked up at the little boy. He understood that he belonged to the beggars’ family. The taxi driver who was rejected by him rushed to the spot and lifted him up and wiped the blood. Carrying his bag, made him sit in his taxi. While driving he turned to him and asked him so many times if it was very painful. Without knowing his name and whereabouts he cared for him and showed his kindness. Tears welled up in his eyes. He was overwhelmed by their timely help expecting nothing in return. After this incident, the man of God never forgot to pray for the auto and taxi drivers and beggars.

Beloved in Christ, in our personal life or in the path of our ministry, we may hold a grudge against a few and harbour bitter and adverse thought about them. It may seem to be just in our point of view. “You shall love your neighbour as yourself” is the commandment given by God, the fountain of love. We never think that everyone, even the one who is despised by us is included in it.

In the Holy Bible we read that Isaac and his family, servants, flocks and herds were sent away from the place by Abimelech. Isaac departed from there. Later Abimelech came to Isaac with his friend and a commander. Even though Isaac knew that they hated him and sent him away, he accepted them and made them a feast. (Genesis 26:30) When Isaac could give a feast to the one who drove him away, we can also accept the people who gave trouble to us, who reproached us and who made us shed tears. Jesus said, “Love your enemies…pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you”. Jesus Christ practised what He preached and set an example for us to follow. Let us obey His commandments and become soul winners.
