Fear not, believer

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man…but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” – 1Corinthians 10:13

Recently I had been to a private bank. There I happened to meet a jewel appraiser known to me. He asked me, “Madam, when shall we get rid of coronavirus? Everyone is filled with fear, worry and anxiety. Please pray for me and my family.” I spoke to him for a few minutes encouraging and emboldening him with my comforting words.

We are hit violently by the huge second wave of covid-19. So many children of God, famous figures, doctors, nurses, police personnel, our friends and relatives were being swept away. The level of spread and severity is increasing and there is shortage of beds in the hospitals, medicine and oxygen that hinders the recovery of the infected. But the fear and anxiety that prevail among us is more dangerous than the pestilence. While I was writing this devotion, I was shocked and shaken to hear an incident that had taken place in Chikmagalur, Karnataka. A well off, retired Tahsildar who was tested positive for covid-19 left a death note and committed suicide fearing that the members of his family would get infected with covid-19. What a sorrowful incident! We need not be overwhelmed with fear, anxiety and worry “for God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of sound mind.”

In today’s Scripture reading we find God testing Abraham and telling him to offer his son Isaac who was born through promise at his old age, as a burnt offering to him. Abraham rose early in the morning, took the necessary things and set out with his grown-up son. Don’t we get goosebumps looking at Abraham’s faith and obedience? Can we be as faithful and obedient as he was? Abraham returned triumphantly with his son because of his faith that they would return safe and his word of faith that, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering and above all his faith in God’s promise that, “I will multiply you exceedingly.” He was fully convinced that He who had promised was able to perform.

Beloved, the triumphant Jesus who said “In the world you will have tribulations but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” is with us. We should never give up our courage which is rewarding. In the Scripture we meet many servants of God who were saved and lifted up from the path of tribulations. God will set us free as well. Let us follow the do’s and don’ts of covid-19 and may God help us to stay safe.
