Bore no fruit
“…see here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still, I find none.” – Luke 13:7
I recall the school days in 90s and wonder at the educational system and the mindset of students in those days. At the end of the academic year, annual exam would be conducted. A student had to secure a minimum of 35% marks in each subject to pass an exam. If a student scored less than 35% marks even in one subject, he would be detained. He had to repeat the same class for one more year in the same class room with the same teacher. That year would be very difficult for the withheld the student. In case the student failed to obtain 35% marks would remain in the same class even for three years. The other freshers would be warned not to mingle with the students who were repeating the class lest they got spoiled by their attitude. These students would be insulted at home also. It was a very painful experience to repeat the same class again and again.
In the 13th chapter of the gospel of Luke in the New Testament, Jesus told the parable of the barren fig tree. A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard. He looked for fruit on it every year and found none. How sad it was to find no fruit on the fig tree for three years. Though the fig tree grew well, it was barren and it was wasting the soil. When the owner told the gardener to cut the tree, the gardener interceded for the fig tree. The end of the parable was not given.
Beloved, God has given us all comforts, good spiritual atmosphere and a lot more favour. We enjoy the benefits of all His blessings but lead a useless life without yielding any fruit that is expected from us by God. How unfair on our part to receive all the blessings, but to give nothing in return. Just we need to ponder over the years wasted. Let us bear fruit no matter where we are placed and where we are sent by God. Let us avail the opportunity. Our life is not over yet. It is high time that we yielded fruit. Let us make our master happy by leading a very fruitful life.
