Let us not despise anyone
“Take care that you do not despise one of these little one.” - Matthew 18:10
It is quite common that our unspiritual nature never let us give due respect and importance to the ones who are lower in age, rank, qualification and status. We do not entrust them with any responsibilities. We just belittle them saying that they are like mushrooms sprung up yesterday and we fail to identify their talents and values. But the Bible says that we should not regard any one with contempt. Once a young boy who was not yet eighteen, approached the world-famous evangelist D.L. Moody and asked him for a chance to deliver a sermon in his church in Chicago. Thinking that he was too young to preach, Moody made excuses. After many months the youth was asked to preach according to the plan of God. His message was so powerful that the people who had backslidden began to repent. D.L. Moody listened to the message with tears. Then he made up his mind not to look down on others.
In the Holy Bible, we read about young men who were belittled by the members of their family. Joseph was scorned and despised by his own brothers. When David was in the battlefield, he was viewed with contempt by his brothers. But we all know very well that God performed greater things through these young men. A Pharisee despised a tax collector thinking that he was only righteous. He thought he was not like tax collector. But the tax collector who said a very simple prayer to God to be merciful to him, the sinner was very precious and special in God’s eyes.
Sometimes we may despise someone in our work place, church or family. Do we put on a show that we are better than others in appearance, words and deeds? But it is a sin in God’s sight. We read in Philippians 2:3 that we should regard others better than ourselves. Do we boast that no one else can do all these things except us? God can miraculously give power even to a donkey to speak.
Friends, if we have the mind of Jesus Christ, we will not despise and condemn anyone. Let us not neglect our parents if they are unlettered. We should never view the co-workers who are less talented with contempt. Let us not look down on the believers in the church if their spiritual growth is not satisfactory. Let us have the mind of Jesus Christ. Let us regard others better than us. Then God will exalt us.
