Powerline and mynahs

“They do not belong to the world. Just as I do not belong to the world.” - John 17:16

Joel had a nice time playing and he was returning home. At that time, Joel noticed a few mynahs sitting on the powerline that was passing over near their terrace. Joel was admiring the shrill noise of the birds and tried to catch one bird. Alas, as the tip of a finger slightly touched the powerline, he got shocked and fell down. The mynahs flew away. Now when Joel got recovered, a question arose in his mind. He asked his mother, “How is it that the mynahs did not get shocked when they were sitting on the line but I got shocked when I was in contact with it?” His mother replied “When mynahs sat on the powerline they were not in contact with the earth. When you stand on the ground, you are in touch with the earth. Thus, you felt the shock.”

Though the mynahs are in the world, they are not connected to the world. So, they lead a simple, safe and carefree life flying about happily. We have been called to live like mynahs. How to live like mynahs? The Bible says, “Though we are in the world, we are not of this world.” Our souls are corrupted with the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life. Satan used all the three temptations with Eve in the garden of Eden. For example, Eve was tempted with lust of the flesh. So, she saw the tree was good for food, then she was tempted with lust of eyes. So, it was pleasant to the eyes. Thirdly she was tempted with the pride of life when she wanted to become wise as God. But Jesus Christ overcame all these three temptations to sin which were used by Satan in the wilderness.

Beloved, let us keep in mind the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, “They do not belong to the world just as I do not belong to the world.” Though we live in this sinful world, we should neither be attracted nor shaken by the worldly way of living and the activities of the worldly people. We need not try to please the people. Let our life be pleasing to God. May God help us to lead a life that is well pleased to God.
