Quail

"The people asked, and he brought quails..." - Psalm 105:40

Quail is mentioned in many places in the Bible, such as Exod. 16: 12,13, Num. 11: 31. The Lord provides quail as meat for the Israelites. Before the manna was given, quail was given as food for the Israelites. We see this in Exod. 16:12,13. Although quail are small birds, they are found to be full of protein. The Lord meets the food needs of His people at the right time and in the right way.

But in Num. 11:31, we see that the quail were lying on both sides of the camp, for a day's journey distance. The purpose of providing them in that quantity was their own desire! The people are crying for food, for meat. In Numbers 11:4,5, who will give us meat to eat? We think of the fish, the cucumbers, the radishes, the greens, the onions, and the garlic that we ate for free in Egypt.

The Lord has already given them quail. Manna has been given. Human needs change every day. We must get what we want. It was the nature of the Israelites to cry and grumble when we did not get it. Today, we also grumble when we do not get what we want. In Ex. 16:1-13, quail were given for meat. They grumbled even then. But here in Numbers 11, they cry. We too often start crying to the Lord in this way, no matter what.

Such cries may satisfy our desires. But do not forget that they bring the wrath of God. The blessings that come into our lives according to His will and according to the Lord's plan will elevate us. According to the verse "The blessing of the Lord makes us rich, and He adds no sorrow with it," the blessings that the Lord Himself gives us will bring us happiness. Otherwise, let us remember that while eating quail, we too have the opportunity to suffer the punishment and sorrow that the Israelites received. Here, the quails are seen as a warning sound to us.
