Eagle

"But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles..." - Isaiah 40:31

Many years ago, my husband had a small gold-plated eagle toy on his desk. I had bought it and given it to him as a gift. The above verse was what prompted me to buy it. That day, I learned what the Bible says about eagles and what are the common characteristics of eagles.

There are two key words in the above verse. They will “rise up like eagles”! Eagles can soar with their wings. But once they reach a certain height, they stop flapping their wings and fly high in the sky. Eagles have large, heavy wings. They expend a lot of energy each time they flap their wings. So they are used to floating in the warm air of the atmosphere. They save their energy for other things. We too, like the eagles, should stretch our faith in God, just as an eagle spreads its wings. With the Holy Spirit, the warm wind of the atmosphere that lifts the eagles, we will rise to greater heights. There is more about eagles. They are sharp-sighted and relentless perseverance.

When I compare the nature of the eagle with a character in the Bible, David comes to mind. Before David became king, he was a mighty warrior who was protected and guided by God. “ For by thee I have run through a troop: by my God have I leaped over a wall .” (2 Samuel 22:30). Like an eagle, David displayed strength and courage in the face of adversity. Like the eagle’s keen eyesight, his keen intelligence, his keen insight, and David’s trust in God are inspiring examples for us to reach new heights in our journey with God. The eagle is a symbol in the Bible for us to remember spiritual growth and the strength we can find in God. Amen. Hallelujah!
