My Country
“…supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks be made for all men…and all who are in authority…” – 1Timothy 2:1, 2
Rev. Dr. John Scudder was a very famous American doctor. One night he visited a patient in New York. His attention was caught by the title of a pamphlet lying on the table. It was titled “The claims of 60 crore people.” The pamphlet described vividly how lakhs of people go to grave daily in India without getting even the basic needs. He was shaken by the question “Who will go and do something for them?” John Scudder felt God’s calling. He determined to proclaim the unsearchable riches of Christ. His father forbade John’s going as medical missionary to India. He threatened to disinherit him if he went to India. Regardless of all opposition, he came to India with his wife, Harriet and a two-year-old baby girl. After a few days of their arrival, they lost their little daughter. Two more babies died soon after their birth. Nothing could deter them from their commitment. They continued their medical missionary endeavours relentlessly. In subsequent years, God blessed them with 7 sons and 2 daughters. All their children were sent at a certain age to America for doing medicine and higher studies. But all of them came back to India in response to the call of Christ and served as missionaries. John scudder was the first medical missionary. Ida Scudder the founder of the Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore, was a grand - daughter of John Scudder.
When Moses was tending the flock of sheep in the wilderness, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. And the Lord said, “I will send you to bring my people, the children of Israel out of Egypt.” But Moses was unwilling and not prepared to accept his call. He was convinced after a long discourse.
Dear youth, observing the occurring phenomena around us, do we find fault with the political leaders and their administration? Do we have great concern about our countrymen? Do we deem them as our fellow beings? John Scudder, an American had the burden for the wellness of Indians. Do we genuinely love our country? What have we done for our country and our people? Let us think it over. Have we set aside sometime everyday to pray for our country? Only prayer can bring in transformation in our country. Loving Republic day greetings to you!
