Centurion

“…I say unto you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” – Luke 7:9

It is a marvel to us to see or hear about any extraordinary performance exhibited by someone. Won’t it make us wonder, when Jesus was astonished by the goodness of a certain man? Yes, it was the centurion who amazed Jesus. Even though the name of the centurion was not given, his good characteristics and good works were worth mentioning in the Bible. Let us compare our lives with that of the centurion and shall we try to lead a life that is commendable by the Lord?

 Although the centurion was a commander in the army, he loved his servant dearly. There would be nothing to wonder, if he had sought Jesus for the healing of his son or wife. But he made a plea for his servant. How are our thought, mindset and works? Do we have such concern for the people who work in our house?

 Although the centurion was a gentile, he was friendly with the Jews and built a synagogue for them. How tolerant and broad minded he was!

Bypassing the feeling of caste and clan, he had the intention to do good works to others as much as he could. Let us also be tolerant eschewing the thought of caste and come out of the narrow circle of selfishness.

 The centurion humbled himself and sent word through his friends as “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof.” While praying, we humble ourselves. But in our day today life we don’t have the mind to be submissive in front of other people. We find it very difficult to be meek and humble.

 The short line “Say a word” reflects the exceptional and unshakeable faith of the centurion in the word of Jesus. Nowadays we believe the false promises of men. Let us ponder how much is our faith in the word of God.

Though the name of the centurion was not mentioned in the Scripture, his name will be found in the Book of life. Without craving for name and fame in this world, let us strive to witness to Christ in our lives to get our name written in the Book of Life of the lamb.
