Job
“…you have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord…” – James 5:11
Job was the one and only biblical character who was praised by the Lord and given a testimony that, “There is none like him on the earth a blameless and upright man one who fears God and shuns evil.” He was a righteous man leading a holy life. Who is a righteous man? One who does what is right and pleasing to God, isn’t it? Job feared God and made atonement for the general sinfulness of all the members of the family regularly. He worshipped and served the Lord with whole heart and sought forgiveness from Him when needed. Job’s faith in God was great. Job was unaware of the conversation and argument between the Lord and satan and that his difficult time was the consequences of God’s permission given to satan to test him. He lost his 10 beloved children in a day and all his possessions were destroyed and his health was ruined but he did not like to give up God. He assured that “Though He slay me, I will hope in Him.” He endured all his losses, and pain with perseverance.
He was steadfast in his faith in God amidst his wife’s mockery and offensive words and his friends’ accusations. When Job prayed for his friends, the Lord restored Job’s losses and gave Job twice as much as he had before. In addition, Job had a revelation about the resurrection of Jesus and His second coming before thousands of years. At last, satan was defeated and his remark about Job was made untrue.
Beloved, God teaches us many things through our grief and sorrow. But that does not mean that he sends troubles only for that purpose. Suffering is not always the direct result of sin. We learn this truth from Job’s life. Without trying to understand the reason for our suffering, diseases, grief, pain and affliction let us endure them patiently. As we know “The secret things belong to the Lord our God.” God’s purpose for our suffering is beyond our understanding. Sometimes it is sent to develop our faith and mould our character. So, in such sorrowful situations, let us try to forgive and pray for our relatives and friends who had spoken with contempt. God will give back what we had lost namely health, peace and joy and all good things. For sure we will be blessed doubly.
