Fire of love

“For the love of Christ compels us, …” – 2 Corinthians 5:14

Bishop Victor Felix spent 20 years of his life in dark, solitary confinement in Russia. Every afternoon a mattress made of straw would be laid in his room and he could sleep for 7 hours on it. For the rest of the 17 hours, he had to keep walking to and fro in his cell. He would be beaten up or tortured by the guards if he stood still or lay down. He endured the tortures for twenty years. Then for four more years he was exiled to Siberia, the coldest region. He was made to stand undressed when the temperature was -60꣠ C. But it was a miracle that he was not frozen to death. The reason was that the glow of the fire of love ignited by Jesus melted the snow. He let the fire set by God in his heart melt all his bitterness and hatred towards his torturers. 

King Nebuchadnezzar made a decree that those who failed to fall down and worship the gold image set up by him would be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego who had strong and unshakeable faith in God declared, “Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace. But if not, we will not worship the gold image set up by you.” How commendable their faith is! Though they were cast into the blazing fire, they were delivered by Jesus who was walking with them in the midst of the flames. Great is the power of God to save the people who trust in Him. 

We read that “The genuineness of your faith being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire may be found to praise, honor and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1Peter 1:7) A metal when tested by fire gets purified and strengthened likewise when our faith is tested, what degree of faith we will have. Do we become broken-hearted when we encounter problems and hardships? No. We must be compelled and hard pressed by the love of Jesus Christ. Are we sanctified and delivered and begun to shine by the burning fire of love of the Lord? Our situation can not separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Let us be seen with the fire of love burning in us. Amen.
