Proverbial Rebuke 

“He who is often rebuked and hardens his neck will suddenly be destroyed and that without remedy.” – Proverbs 29:1 

Beloved in today’s devotion let us look into what is given in the book of Proverbs regarding reproof.

Do not reproach a mocker: (Pro. 9:8)

The scoffers argue vehemently that their deeds are absolutely perfect. So, they do not take the correction in the right sense. They despise rebukes and counsel. When rebuked, we are treated with contempt. Thus, it is better to stay away from scoffers. 

Rebuke a wiseman: (Pro.9:8)

The wise men accept admonition and reproof and counsel with submission. They view open rebuke as a tool to stop them from continuing on a destructive path. The wise counsel given by Abigail to David at the right time prevented him from shedding innocent blood and taking vengeance on the entire household. 

The plight of the heart that is hardened: 

The proverb says, “He who is often rebuked and hardens his neck will suddenly be destroyed.” But many of us pay no heed to the word of God’s rebuke and take it in that intervenes with us. We tend to harden our hearts deliberately and despise reproaches. We are reminded of Saul and the sons of Eli who disdained reprimands and ruined their lives. Let us humble ourselves and accept rebuke with love. (Pro. 1:22, 23)

We may be a fool or a scorner. Let us all turn at God’s rebuke in a positive way. Whoever heeds reproof is honored. Let us embrace the blessings of rebuke. May God fill us with His spirit so that we can walk in His ways and lead a peaceful life.
