Pretext

“He who is slothful in his work is a brother to him who is a great destroyer.” - Proverb 18:9

A certain man was climbing a coconut tree in a garden. He was caught by the gardener red handed. When he was asked for the reason for his doing so, he said that he was going to pick some grass there. The gardener asked him, “Where on earth do you get grass from the coconut tree?” The thief replied, “That is why I am getting down from the tree without finding any grass there.” There are people who give in-appropriate and false excuses to escape when they are caught. This is how when a student was asked by the teacher why he was late, he retorted saying that he was only a little late. The teacher wanted to know the genuine reason for his late coming. But the student insisted that he was a little bit late. But he had no real reason for being late. There incidents may make us laugh but in fact we too are doing the same in our day today life. We give convenient excuses for the work half done, undone or done wrongly. When we fail to accomplish the assigned task, we look for lame excuses for not doing it properly on time. Why do we give unacceptable excuses?

1. No genuine interest in doing that task.

2. Spending more time on other work without focussing on that particular task.

3. Not committed to the task so not putting heart and soul into the work allotted.

4. Being lethargic and having false courage to give a cover up for the truth, if asked for the reason for the failure.

If we are slothful and unsuccessful in our workplace, we may lose the trust and credibility of our higher authorities. It is very difficult to win their confidence and trust again. The Holy Bible says, “Noah did everything just as God commanded him.” As Noah accomplished everything perfectly, his family and all living creatures were saved.

The desire of our Lord is that we must be victorious in our lives so that others will be blessed through us. Goodness and blessings do not come of its own. When we carry out our work honestly and diligently without giving room for slothfulness and pretext, we will be exalted and our lives will be magnified. Let us be a blessing to everyone. Hallelujah.
