Dove

"...Be as harmless as doves" - Matthew 10:16

A dove is a gentle and beautiful bird. Is there anyone who does not like a dove? The dove is a symbol of peace, joy, new beginnings, and hope. The dove is a harmless, clean bird. After the heavy rain stopped, Noah opened the window of the ark to see if the water had dried up and released a dove. It returned with no place to rest on its paws. When the dove was sent out the second time, it came back with an olive leaf in its beak. This is a sign of a new beginning and hope. We see in the Bible that when Jesus Christ was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, the Holy Spirit descended on Him in the form of a dove, right? The symbol of the Holy Spirit is the dove.

When Jesus Christ sent his disciples out on a mission, he said to his disciples, "Behold, I send you out as sheep among wolves; therefore be wise as serpents and innocent as doves." Other birds, when they feel that their nests are in danger from snakes and eagles, will move their nests, but the dove, after building a nest, laying eggs, incubating them, and hatching the chicks, goes out to look for food for them and returns. Some of the chicks may have been attacked and killed by snakes or eagles or may have been snatched and killed by eagles. When the dove sees this, it will cry and weep like a human being but will never be discouraged and move its nest. Similarly, when the Lord sends us on His mission, we may be insulted, hurt, killed, beaten, imprisoned. But none of these things will separate us from the love of Christ. That is what Paul says when he writes to the Romans, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” (Romans 8:36-39). We must not lose heart and turn aside from the path that has been set before us, but rather continue the path that has been set before us.

“…for our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us an exceeding and eternal weight of glory.”

- Mrs. Sheba John
