Don’t conceal

“Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?” She said, “Yes, for so much.” – Acts 5:9

Being filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles spoke the word of God with boldness. There was a large group of believers who had all things in common. Those who owned land and houses sold them and brought the money to the apostles. This was given out for each person’s needs.

In these circumstances two believers namely Ananias and his wife Sapphira sold a possession. Ananias kept a part of the price aside deliberately with his wife’s consent. He brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet. Peter asked, “Why has satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? You had not lied to men but to God.” Hearing these words, Ananias fell down and breathed his last. Sapphira came not knowing what had happened. When she was asked, she replied firmly that the total cost of the land was only that much. At once she fell down dead. Both agreed together to lie and test the spirit of the Lord and they met their tragic end. When Ananias was tempted to keep a part of the price aside, Sapphira must have given him good counsel and prevented him from committing that sin. They were given one more opportunity to confess. When Sapphira was asked if they had sold it for so much, she could have grasped the situation and disclosed the truth. How sad it is!

“For the love of money is the root of all of evil” and it was well proved from the life of Ananias and Sapphira. The lessons we learn from the couple are: - As a family or as life partners we should not agree together to yield to evil urges and to do wicked deeds that are against the Scriptures. At least one of us must give voice to what is right, just and true. Otherwise, false hood and perjury will easily creep into the family to corrupt it.

Beloved ones, let the incident that occurred in the life of Ananias and Sapphira be a warning to us. We must be very faithful in everything concerning God. We should not agree about doing anything with evil intent to others. We need to handle money with care to avoid many problems. We must be faithful and honest in giving to God so as to receive His perfect blessings.
